The EcoTek project lab

Environmental challenges.
Hands-on solutions.

Our projects connect sustainability with the electronics and engineering we’re learning. Here’s what we’re building.

01 / Our first project

Waste Wise

Prototype in development

Waste Wise is a smart compost-bin prototype designed to make composting conditions more visible. Sensors connect to an Arduino to collect readings, with a display showing information and simple status messages.

Instead of relying only on what we can see from outside, we can observe changes in the bin and learn more about the decomposition process.

We’re also exploring the physical design, including insulation, mixing, and ways to keep the electronics accessible while protecting them from the compost environment.

What we monitor

A clearer picture of the bin.

01

Temperature

Observe how temperature changes as material decomposes.

02

Humidity

Track the humidity of the air around the sensor.

03

Moisture

Use moisture-sensor readings to compare wetter and drier conditions.

04

CO₂-related signals

Explore how the gas sensor responds as conditions change.

Sensor interpretation and calibration are part of our development work. CO₂-related signals are experimental; they are not yet a verified measurement of CO₂ concentration.

The prototype approach

Collect. Observe. Improve.

01 / COLLECT

Connect the sensors

The Arduino reads the sensors inside and around the compost bin.

02 / OBSERVE

Make the readings useful

The display presents readings and status messages so we can follow changes.

03 / IMPROVE

Test the next version

We use our observations to refine sensor placement, physical design, and feedback.

The next chapter is taking shape.
